TOLA OBTAINS CUM LAUDE IN SOMATOLOGY DESPITE FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS

Alulutho Tola (23) from the Eastern Cape completed her Advanced Diploma in Somatology with Cum Laude despite experiencing financial troubles caused by the transition from being a fully funded student living at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) residence to having no funding and living on her own. She will be graduating at the DUT’s Virtual Autumn Graduation on Friday, 13 May 2022.

She had to apply for a part- time job of being a mentor in her department, to assist her financially.

“This took a strain on my academics because I had to juggle work and school which was also very difficult. However, through prayer, hard work and support from my family and friends, I made it. It wasn’t easy, I won’t lie, but I have no one to thank but God!” said Tola.

Speaking about her achievement, she indicated that she worked hard from the beginning of the year to make both herself and her family proud. Upon hearing of her good academic results, Tola said her family was ecstatic and extremely proud of her.

With regards to her passion for somatology, she said: “I have always been passionate about skincare, but I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would study about it. I was quite confused about what I wanted to do because at some point, I wanted to be a veterinarian surgeon, but I guess I ended up where I should be. I fell in love with somatology along the way and I am so happy with my choice.”

Tola whose first graduation was virtual in 2021, is looking forward to DUT’s upcoming physical graduation which will be announced in due course.

She plans to study further as she wants to fully branch into medical aesthetics, focusing on surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures. She aims to open her own aesthetic clinic one day and plans to work even harder to get there.

Her advice to students wanting to follow in her footsteps is to ensure that they love what they are doing in order to do the job effectively and with care.
