THE RESEARCH AND POSTGRADUATE SUPPORT DIRECTORATE HOSTS A BOOK PUBLICATIONS RECOGNITION AWARDS 2022


The Research and Postgraduate Support (RPS) recently hosted a Book Publications Recognition Awards function and a mini farewell ceremony for the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Engagement (DVC: RIE), Professor Sibusiso Moyo.

As part of the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) commitment to promoting quality research outputs, and in a bid to further encourage emerging researchers, the Research and Postgraduate Support Directorate awarded book authors in order to stimulate book publications and create a culture of writing and reading amongst DUT researchers, students and the community at large.

The books whose authors were awarded were reviewed by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and further considered by the internal committee within the Research and Postgraduate Support Directorate in terms of criteria’s and recommended for the different prize categories.

According to the Research and Postgraduate records, the book awardees have been selected based on the publications were made between the year 2018 and 2020; publications that have been audited and received subsidy from the DHET. Authors are emerging/established researchers within the DUT and that the prize money proposed was determined based on the total number of units received from the DHET for the individual publication.

The award recipients were Dr Omololu Fagbadebo, Dr Anna Johanna Catharina Womack, Professor Andries Van Aarde, Professor Alexender Mointyre Johnston, Dr Jean Chrysostome Kiyala, Dr Rachel Matteau-Matsha, Dr Dumisani Ngwenya, Professor Sanja Bauk and Professor Michael Chapman. During the event, the authors were given the opportunity to give synopses of their books and brief remarks.

In her remarks, the DVC: RIE, Professor Sibusiso Moyo commented on the relevance of the awarded books to the sustainable development of DUT, South Africa and the world at large. She also reiterated the commitment of DUT to ensuring that the University continue to compete with other institutions of the world in cutting-edge research. She thanked the RPS for organising the book awards and a farewell ceremony for her.
