DUMA IS THE FIRST IN HER FAMILY TO GRADUATE AND TOP IT WITH A CUM LAUDE ACCOLADE

Thandiswa Duma from Port Shepstone did not choose to initially study information processing in the field of Accounting and Informatics at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) but when she started her studies she thoroughly enjoyed it and realised its what was meant for her.

The 21-year-old Duma graduated with Cum Laude for her Diploma in Cost and Management Accounting, Faculty of Accounting and Informatics, at the DUT Celebratory Autumn Graduation Celebration on Wednesday, 13 July 2022.

In 2019, she started doing Cost and Management Accounting at DUT, but professed that the voyage was not an easy one.

“I was always told that at university it is hard as no one will spoon feed us about work, I was full of fear but when I started my first-year of study. I easily made many friends who were doing the same course and that led to the formation of my study group which contributed to me doing well in my studies,” she said.

When she heard she had achieved Cum Laude she was shocked to say the least but embraced the possibilities it comes with.

Her family were over the moon with her results because she is the first graduate in her family and to add to that accolade she obtained Cum Laude, a feat she never expected could happen.

Being studious by nature is the driving force for Duma who wishes to further her studies and pursue her Advanced Diploma in Cost and Management Accounting so that she can gain more opportunities in the field.

She shares some valuable advice to first-year students who want to embark in this career.

“You need to able to work under pressure because there is lot of work and you should be flexible to be able to work with others because you can never study by yourself, and it would be best to form a study group,” she said.
