Graduation Hat Throw
ALUMNI RELATIONS
A thread that binds us where our story began…

The Durban University of Technology is a result of the merger in April 2002 of two prestigious Technikons, ML Sultan, Technikon Natal and Indumiso College of Education. It was named the Durban Institute of Technology and later became the Durban University of Technology in line with the rest of the universities of technology.

The Alumni Relations Office is the bridge between Durban University of Technology (DUT) and its graduates, and its aim is to cultivate and nurture a lifelong relationship between alumni and their alma mater.  Alumni have an important role to play in the development of the institution and the Alumni Relations Office is tasked with initiating and implementing an Alumni Relations programme which will create a desire amongst alumni to identify with and support their alma mater i.e., the DUT.  The office implements various projects and programmes which provide a platform for alumni to network with one another and which also provides a platform to keep alumni updated on current developments at DUT. Our relationship with our alumni is invaluable hence we encourage alumni to register and keep us updated with change of details.

What we do

DUTConnect Platform - Benefits of joining the platform

We are proud of your ongoing success and development and have listened to your feedback as to what we need to keep our alumni community connected.  We have created a new online community just for you.  DUTConnect brings our community together and allows us to connect in these ways:

  • A running feed of alumni updates/contributions to continue the conversation with interesting content

  • A full opt-in directory of alumni and students allowing you to connect with your DUT community around the world

  • The opportunity to mentor and be mentored by others

  • A job board with current opportunities posted by DUT's strategic partners

  • Group conversations that allow you to engage at a more granular level with those most interested in that conversation

  • Events posted by alumni and DUT encouraging pop-up engagement, coffee meetings around the world, webinars hosted by subject matter experts within our networks, and other organic engagement opportunities created for and by you.

We are excited to have you as an active member of DUTConnect.  We know that you are very busy successful leaders so we ask that you engage with the platform in the way that is most relevant to your needs as an alumnus. This might be logging in several times a week and posting a comment in the feed, being a mentor, being mentored, posting jobs where you need trained talent, engaging with a group that energizes you, and/or hosting an event leveraging your experience that would be valuable to our network.

We can't wait for DUTConnect to be your home for networking and so much more.  Please REGISTER NOW .

Bridging the Gap between Unemployment and Employment Series Blog

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) understands that employment are key issues for graduates. As such the Advancement and Alumni Relations Officer (AARO) have conducted research via surveys and evaluations to bridge the gap between unemployment and employment. AARO has determined from this evaluation that there are few steppingstones that are missing which we would discuss in detail in every blog we post. It is evident that even though graduates have the theoretical component in their favour they seem to lack basic workplace knowledge which prospective employers will search for in a candidate. We have recognised the need for graduates to be groomed in a holistic manner so they are armed with the theoretical, practical, and basic work etiquette component which will give DUT graduates a slight edge compared to other graduates. DUT recognises the need for decent employment is the greatest need of graduates on completion of their studies. The demands of employers of having a certain amount of experience in the chosen work field is also a stumbling block for graduates. AARO will be running a series of blogs throughout the year and will then end with a multiple choice questionnaire on all blogs posted and should you achieve the required marks you will be issued with a Work Readiness certificate which will confirm your attendance and competence in basic work skills. We will be covering a variety of topics to enhance your opportunity in seeking permanent employment. Follow our blog every month and be educated on the integration of graduates into mainstream employment.
